Cardinal Ridge crew member running a tracked stump grinder in a front yard, chips flying

Stump grinding that gives you the yard back.

Stumps ground below grade and cleaned up, ready for seed, sod or planting, in Aldie, Leesburg, Chantilly and across Northern Virginia.

Stump Grinding

Gone below grade, ready to replant.

An old stump is something to mow around, trip over and watch sprout. Grinding takes it down below the surface so the lawn can run straight across, or a new tree or bed can go in nearby.

We grind the stump and the main surface roots, rake the grindings, and can backfill with topsoil and seed so the patch blends into the lawn. One stump or a dozen, whether we took the tree down or someone else did years ago.

Back-yard stumps are usually no problem. We check gate width and access on the site visit.

What Is Included

From stump to level ground.

  • Grinding below grade

The stump is ground down below the soil surface, not just flush with it.

  • Surface roots

Major surface roots around the stump chased out so the mower rides flat.

  • Grindings raked or removed

Left as mulch if you want them, or hauled away.

  • Topsoil and seed

The hole backfilled with soil and seeded, on request.

  • Multiple stumps

Whole tree lines and old lots cleared in one visit.

  • Back-yard access

Gate width and access checked on the site visit, before the day of the job.

How An Estimate Works

Walk it, price it, put it in writing.

  1. Call or send the form

Tell us what you have in mind. A sentence is enough to start.

  2. We walk the property with you

We look at the tree, what is underneath it and how we can get to it, and tell you honestly what it needs.

  3. You get a written estimate

We follow up with the price in writing. Estimates and design consultations are free.

Good Questions

Asked before every grind.

How deep do you grind?

Below the soil surface, deep enough to lay sod or grow grass over the spot. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same place, tell us and we will grind deeper.

Will you grind a stump from a tree someone else removed?

Yes. It does not matter who took the tree down or how long ago.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grindings make a good mulch, so many clients keep them. Otherwise we haul them away and can backfill with topsoil.

Can you get a grinder into my back yard?

In most cases, yes. We check gate width and access on the site visit.

How does pricing work?

We walk the property with you, then follow up with a written estimate. Estimates and design consultations are free.

Which areas do you serve?

We are based in Aldie and work across Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, including Leesburg, Ashburn, South Riding, Stone Ridge, Brambleton, Chantilly, Sterling and Centreville.
