Getting the Most From an Irrigation System in Gainesville, VA

Start the season with a check

A spring start-up means turning the water on slowly, running every zone and watching it. Heads get knocked by mowers, buried by mulch or blocked by shrubs that have grown since last year. Ten minutes per zone finds most problems.

Set the controller for the season, not the year

A lawn needs far less water in May than in late July. Run times left at summer settings waste water in spring and fall and encourage shallow roots and disease. Water early in the morning, deeply and less often.

Fix small leaks quickly

A zone that will not shut off, a geyser where a head used to be, or a patch that is always soggy are all cheap to fix early and expensive to ignore.

Winterize before the first hard freeze

Water left in the lines will freeze, expand and crack pipes and fittings. In Northern Virginia the lines should be blown out between late October and mid-November.
