First, do you need one?

Sometimes regrading solves the problem for less. A wall makes sense when you need to hold soil in a small space, create a level area or stop a bank washing out.

What makes a wall last

Walls fail from behind. Water builds up in the soil, freezes and pushes. A wall that lasts has a compacted stone base, drainage stone behind it and an outlet for water.

Materials

Segmental block is strong and consistent, and suits curves and raised beds. Natural stone costs more and looks at home beside older houses.

Height, permits and HOAs

Taller walls can need engineering and a county permit, and most Bristow HOAs want to approve exterior changes. Ask about both before work starts.

Use the wall

A wall at seat height beside a patio is extra seating. A raised bed along the front of the house adds structure and lifts planting.
