A retaining wall fails from the back, not the front. Water builds up in the soil behind it, freezes and pushes. The walls that last are the ones with a compacted base, drainage stone and somewhere for the water to go.
We build walls as part of the whole grade. Sometimes the right answer is a wall, sometimes it is regrading, and often it is a bit of both. We will tell you which on the site visit.

Do I need a retaining wall or just regrading?
It depends on the slope and where the water goes. We look at both on the site visit and recommend the simpler fix when it will do the job.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always water. Without drainage behind the wall, saturated soil pushes it over. Every wall we build has a drained base.
Can you replace an old timber wall?
Yes. We remove failing timber or block walls and rebuild them properly.
Does a wall need a permit?
Taller walls can require a permit and engineering, depending on the county. We will tell you on the site visit if yours is likely to.
